Why Centerline Crossovers Often Lead to Severe Motorcycle Crashes
Motorcycle crashes involving centerline crossovers are frequently serious because riders have far less physical protection than people inside larger vehicles. When a motorcycle enters an opposing lane, even briefly, the closing speed between vehicles can create devastating force within seconds.
Rural highways and county roads may also increase risk because they often include curves, narrow shoulders, and changing pavement conditions. Drivers and riders can have limited reaction time when another vehicle suddenly moves into their lane.
Visibility can also affect how quickly a person recognizes danger ahead. Late afternoon sunlight, uneven road surfaces, or distractions may contribute to lane departures on two-lane roads. Safety experts recommend maintaining steady speeds, remaining alert through curves, and allowing extra space between vehicles to help reduce the chance of head-on roadway collisions.
