According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the motorcycle was traveling north on Interstate 95 when it hit the back of a van. The impact caused the motorcycle to lose control and flip.
The rider, who was wearing a helmet, was thrown from the motorcycle and hit a guardrail along the inside shoulder. He died at the site. The report said he was from Pennsylvania, though his age was not listed.
The van driver, an 81-year-old man from Jupiter, and his 78-year-old female passenger were not hurt. Both were wearing seat belts, according to troopers.
Traffic backups lasted for hours on northbound Interstate 95 after the wreck.
The fatal motorcycle crash remains under review as investigators work to confirm the full sequence. Our condolences go to the rider’s family and loved ones.
Rear-End Motorcycle Collisions Can Become Deadly on Freeways
Motorcycle collisions on freeways can be especially severe because riders have very little protection. When a motorcycle hits another vehicle, the rider may be thrown onto the road or into nearby barriers.
Freeway speed can make these crashes more dangerous. Drivers and riders often have only seconds to react when traffic slows, a vehicle changes speed, or space closes quickly ahead. Even a helmet cannot protect against every type of serious trauma.
Guardrails, shoulders, and nearby traffic can add more hazards after a rider is separated from the motorcycle. After a fatal freeway motorcycle accident, reviews often look at vehicle speed, lane position, following distance, traffic flow, and where the motorcycle traveled before contact.
