Why Crashes Involving Tractor-Trailers Can Be More Complex
Collisions involving tractor-trailers often create more severe roadway hazards due to the size and weight differences between commercial trucks and passenger vehicles. Even at highway speeds, a crash involving a large truck can result in significant vehicle damage and increase the likelihood of occupants becoming trapped.
Vehicle fires can add another layer of danger by exposing occupants to heat, smoke, and rapidly changing conditions. Extrication operations may be necessary when doors or vehicle frames become damaged, preventing occupants from leaving on their own. On major highways, these crashes frequently lead to extended traffic disruptions while injured people receive care, damaged vehicles are removed, and investigators document the roadway. Factors commonly reviewed include traffic flow, visibility, vehicle movements, and road conditions.
