Why Rollover Crashes Can Result in Serious Injuries
Rollover crashes are among the more severe types of roadway collisions because they can subject vehicle occupants to multiple forces in a short period of time. As a vehicle overturns, people inside may be struck from multiple directions, increasing the risk of serious injury.
Several factors can contribute to a rollover, including sudden steering maneuvers, loss of traction, roadway conditions, or contact with another vehicle. Vehicle design can also play a role, as taller vehicles generally have a higher center of gravity than lower-profile passenger cars.
Safety features such as seat belts, airbags, and reinforced roof structures can help reduce the risk of injury during an overturn. Investigators often review roadway evidence, vehicle damage, and other available information to better understand how a rollover developed and why it occurred.
