Why Right-Turn Collisions With Pedestrians Can Be So Dangerous
Pedestrian crashes often happen at intersections, especially when vehicles make right turns. Drivers may focus on traffic from one direction and miss someone crossing nearby. This risk increases when large vehicles, such as dump trucks, are involved because they have larger blind spots.
Blind spots can prevent drivers from seeing people walking near the front or sides of the vehicle. Larger trucks also need more time and distance to stop safely. Even low-speed impacts can cause severe harm to pedestrians.
Crosswalk signals, clear markings, and careful driving can help reduce these incidents. Drivers should always check for pedestrians before turning, while pedestrians should remain alert and use marked crossing areas whenever possible.
