What Factors Are Typically Reviewed in Fatal Residential Fires?
In fatal residential fires, investigators typically focus on identifying where the fire started and how it spread through the structure. This often includes examining the attic, electrical systems, heating sources, and any appliances that may have been operating at the time.
Fire marshals also review building layout and ventilation, which can influence how quickly smoke and flames spread, especially in older homes. Witness statements from neighbors and occupants can help establish the timeline of when the fire was first noticed. In many cases, weather conditions and structural materials are also evaluated to better understand fire behavior. These findings help determine whether the cause was accidental, electrical, or related to another ignition source.
