Wrong-Way Highway Crashes Often Result in Severe Impacts
Wrong-way crashes on divided highways are among the most dangerous types of roadway collisions because they frequently involve direct head-on impacts at highway speeds. Drivers traveling the correct direction often have little time to react when another vehicle suddenly appears in their lane.
These crashes commonly occur during nighttime hours, when visibility is reduced and roadway signs may be harder to see. Even a brief period of confusion or disorientation can place a vehicle into opposing traffic lanes.
Head-on collisions at high speeds can cause significant vehicle damage and serious injuries due to the combined force of both vehicles. Investigators often examine lane positions, roadway markings, and vehicle movement patterns to better understand how a wrong-way crash developed.
