Why Are Left-Turn Crashes Common?
Crashes involving left turns are among the most frequent types of intersection accidents. These incidents often occur when drivers misjudge the speed or distance of oncoming traffic or fail to yield the right of way.
Left turns require drivers to cross opposing lanes of traffic, increasing the risk of a collision if proper caution is not taken. Unlike right turns, which generally follow the natural flow of traffic, left turns demand more precise judgment about speed, distance, and timing. Misjudging any one of these factors, even briefly, can result in a serious crash.
Staying alert, waiting for a clear and adequate gap in traffic, and following traffic signals can help reduce the risk of these crashes. Drivers should also be mindful of vehicles that may be traveling faster than expected, motorcycles that can be harder to spot, and pedestrians who may be crossing at the same time. Taking an extra moment to confirm it is safe before completing a left turn is a simple habit that can prevent a devastating outcome.
