Norton Shores, MI (April 8, 2026) – Several people were hospitalized after two chain-reaction crashes on US-31 near East Sternberg Road on Tuesday afternoon.
The first crash involved three vehicles traveling northbound just after 2:30 p.m. on April 7 near a construction zone. Six people were reported injured, though the exact number taken to the hospital has not been confirmed.
Shortly afterward, two other vehicles crashed nearby, causing a third car to roll over south of the original crash. Two people sustained minor injuries in this second incident.
Northbound traffic on US-31 was partially restricted for about 30 minutes following the initial crash while crews cleared the scene.
Authorities continue to investigate both crashes, and more details will be released as they become available.
Our thoughts are with those injured.
How Chain-Reaction Crashes Often Develop on Highways
Chain-reaction collisions usually occur when one vehicle suddenly stops or slows, causing following vehicles to collide. Construction zones or heavy traffic can increase the likelihood by reducing reaction time.
Vehicle spacing and speed are critical factors. Drivers who are too close or moving at high speed may not have enough time to brake safely. Multiple impacts can amplify damage and lead to more injuries, particularly in rollovers or when smaller vehicles are involved.
A prompt emergency response is crucial to provide medical care, secure the scene, and prevent additional collisions while traffic is being redirected.
