Wayne Co., GA (April 8, 2026) – A late-night industrial fire broke out on Sunday, April 5, at the RYAM facility in Jesup, prompting a large multi-county emergency response.
The fire started inside a digester unit, a piece of equipment used in the paper production process. Emergency units from several surrounding counties responded and worked together to bring the fire under control shortly after midnight.
Officials confirmed the fire was contained around 12:27 a.m., though crews remained on scene for additional operations until about 2 a.m. to ensure the area was secure.
Multiple fire departments assisted in the response, helping prevent the fire from spreading further within the facility. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the fire, and more details will be released as they become available. We wish those affected a full recovery.
What Risks Are Associated With Industrial Facility Fires?
Industrial facilities often contain specialized equipment and materials that can increase the risk of fires. Units used in manufacturing processes, such as those handling heat or chemicals, may create conditions where fires can start if systems fail or overheat.
Areas with multiple access points near the RYAM facility can complicate emergency responses. Responders in Wayne County manage vehicle movement carefully when multiple crews arrive at once.
The size and layout of industrial sites can also make firefighting efforts more complex. Crews may need additional time and coordination to fully control a fire and ensure that all equipment and structures are safe before leaving the scene.
