Why Are Head-On Crashes Usually So Severe?
Head-on crashes are among the most dangerous types of roadway collisions because two vehicles traveling in opposite directions can create a powerful force when they meet. The combined speed of both vehicles can increase the likelihood of serious harm.
These crashes can occur when a vehicle enters lanes intended for opposing traffic, whether due to driver error, roadway confusion, or other factors. Investigators frequently review roadway markings, vehicle positions, driver actions, and environmental conditions to better understand what occurred. Divided roads, clear lane markings, and attentive driving can help reduce the risk of vehicles traveling in the wrong direction. When a crash occurs, the severity can depend on vehicle size, speed, safety equipment, and the positions of those inside the vehicles.
