Hampton, VA (May 21, 2026) – One person was hurt Thursday morning after a rollover along eastbound Interstate 64 at the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel in Hampton. The roadway was temporarily shut down while emergency units worked in the tunnel area.
Investigators said a pickup truck changed lanes near the Mallory St ramp and was then hit by a Hampton Roads Transit bus. The pickup lost control, struck a jersey wall, overturned, and was hit again by the bus. The driver of the truck was taken to a nearby hospital with injuries. No passengers aboard the transit bus were reported hurt.
Traffic backups stretched for several miles before all eastbound lanes reopened later in the day. Charges connected to the lane change are still pending. Officials are continuing to review the circumstances surrounding the roadway collision.
We hope the injured driver makes a smooth and full recovery.
How Tunnel Traffic Backups Can Develop After a Highway Rollover
Traffic delays inside bridge-tunnels often grow quickly after a rollover because drivers have fewer options to move around blocked vehicles. Narrow travel lanes and limited shoulder space can slow cleanup efforts and reduce traffic flow for miles behind the roadway backup. Even after lanes reopen, congestion may continue for hours while traffic patterns return to normal.
Large vehicles such as buses and trucks can also make tunnel delays more difficult to clear. Their size may restrict visibility for nearby drivers and create tighter driving space during busy travel periods. Transportation crews often monitor lane closures, vehicle positions, and roadway debris before allowing full traffic movement again. Heavy morning travel periods can add even more delays as vehicles slowly move through the affected stretch of highway.
