According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the roadway incident happened around 2 a.m., near mile marker 5. Troopers said the southbound semi left the right side of I-271 S and hit three private vehicles belonging to construction workers stationed near an inactive work zone. The truck later came to a stop against a tree.
One construction worker sitting inside an SUV received minor injuries to the hand and face and was taken to a nearby hospital. The semi driver was not hurt, and investigators said impairment was not a factor in the crash. The truck driver was later cited for failing to drive within the marked lanes.
More details surrounding the investigation may be released as additional information becomes available. We hope the injured worker makes a full and speedy recovery.
Why Parked Vehicles Near Work Zones Face Added Risks
Vehicles parked near highway construction zones can face danger, especially during overnight hours when visibility is lower, and traffic speeds remain high. Even inactive work zones may still contain equipment, barriers, and worker vehicles positioned close to travel lanes. Drivers who drift outside marked lanes can quickly strike parked trucks or SUVs before having time to correct their path.
Fatigue is also commonly reviewed after overnight roadway crashes. Reduced alertness can affect steering control and reaction time, particularly on long stretches of highway. In many cases, investigators also examine roadway markings, lighting, and traffic patterns near construction areas to better understand how a vehicle left the roadway. Information gathered from vehicle damage, witness statements, and road conditions can help clarify what factors contributed to the highway collision.
