What Pedestrians and Drivers Should Know About Walking in Active Roadways
Walking in a roadway, outside of a marked crosswalk or sidewalk, creates serious risks for both pedestrians and drivers. At night, visibility drops significantly, making it much harder for drivers to spot someone on foot until it may be too late to stop. Speed, lighting conditions, and road width all affect how quickly a driver can react. In many fatal pedestrian crashes, there is little time between when a person becomes visible and the moment of impact. Georgia law generally requires pedestrians to use sidewalks where available and to yield to traffic when walking in the road. Understanding these dynamics can help explain why such tragedies occur even when no obvious wrongdoing is immediately apparent.
