Marion County, FL (July 28, 2026) – A pedestrian lost his life in a crash overnight in Marion County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred shortly after 11 p.m. on State Road 326, east of Northwest 40th Terrace. Troopers said a 28-year-old driver was traveling east when his vehicle struck a 76-year-old man who was walking in the inside lane of the highway. Investigators said it remains unclear why the pedestrian was in the roadway. He was transported to a hospital, where he later died. The driver, who was wearing a seat belt, was not injured.

The fatal crash remains under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and everyone affected by this tragic loss.

Why Are Overnight Pedestrian Crashes Especially Dangerous?

Pedestrian crashes that occur at night present unique challenges because reduced visibility can limit the time drivers have to recognize and react to someone in the roadway. Darkness, roadway lighting, vehicle speeds, and the pedestrian’s location are among the factors investigators evaluate when reviewing these incidents.

Following a fatal pedestrian collision, investigators typically examine physical evidence at the scene, vehicle damage, witness statements, and any available surveillance or dash camera footage. These findings help determine the sequence of events and identify any contributing circumstances.

Motorists and pedestrians alike are encouraged to remain especially vigilant during nighttime hours. Wearing reflective clothing, using designated crossing areas when available, and staying alert to surrounding traffic can help reduce the risk of serious collisions.

1Seek treatment promptly after being injured in an accident. Your first priority should always be your health. Many providers offer treatment on a lien basis, meaning you can get the care you need now and pay later when your claim is resolved.
2Before speaking with an insurance company, make sure you have the facts. An official police report is the most reliable record of what happened and can help establish liability An experienced attorney can assist you in obtaining this report and using it to protect your interests.
3Consider having your case reviewed by a qualified attorney who can guide you through the next steps. They will safeguard your rights and pursue the compensation you deserve.
