Why Highway Pedestrian Crossings Can Be So Dangerous
Pedestrian deaths on highways often happen because vehicles travel at high speeds and drivers have little time to stop. Unlike city streets, highways are not designed for foot traffic and usually have fewer crossing points, sidewalks, or warning signals for drivers.
Visibility can also become a factor, especially during early morning hours or in areas with heavy traffic. A person crossing multiple lanes may be difficult for drivers to see until they are very close. Larger vehicles, weather conditions, and traffic flow can further reduce reaction time.
After a fatal roadway collision, investigators often examine traffic patterns, lighting, roadway design, and vehicle positioning. Surveillance footage, witness accounts, and physical evidence from the roadway may also help clarify how the fatal sequence unfolded.
