What Factors Can Lead to Pedestrian Crashes at Night?
Pedestrian crashes that occur at night often involve reduced visibility for both drivers and those crossing the roadway. Even in well-lit urban areas, it can be difficult for drivers to see pedestrians in time to react, especially if they are crossing outside designated crosswalks or in areas with limited lighting.
Driver awareness, roadway design, and pedestrian behavior all play important roles in these incidents. Factors such as dark clothing, shadows, and oncoming headlights can make pedestrians harder to detect.
While speed and impairment are common contributors in some crashes, even attentive drivers may struggle to avoid a collision if visibility is limited. Using crosswalks, wearing visible clothing, and staying alert can help reduce the risk of nighttime pedestrian accidents.
