Port Charlotte, FL (May 9, 2026) – A 56-year-old Port Charlotte man died on Friday morning, May 8, following a multi-vehicle crash on Veterans Boulevard in Charlotte County. The collision occurred on County Road 776 east of Wylam Drive, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Investigators said the man was driving a Toyota Sienna westbound when, for unknown reasons, the vehicle suddenly veered left across a grass median and entered the eastbound lanes. The minivan then sideswiped a Honda Passport SUV before striking a guardrail.
Officials reported the vehicle continued moving, crossed back across the roadway, and hit another guardrail before coming to a stop. Emergency units responded, but the driver of the minivan was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Honda SUV, a 39-year-old Punta Gorda man, was not injured. A 1-year-old child riding in the vehicle, secured in a rear-facing child restraint, also was not hurt.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available.
We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.
What Can Cause a Vehicle to Suddenly Cross a Median on a Highway?
When a vehicle suddenly leaves its lane and crosses a median, investigators often look at a range of possible contributing factors. These can include medical emergencies, mechanical failure, distraction, or driver fatigue.
Roadway design and speed can also play a role, especially on divided highways where vehicles travel faster. Once a vehicle enters opposing lanes, the risk of secondary impacts increases significantly. Investigators typically review vehicle condition, tire marks, and roadway evidence to understand how the vehicle left its original path. Witness statements and traffic data may also help determine what occurred in the moments leading up to the crash.
