How Wrong-Way Crashes on Interstates Can Become Serious Multi-Vehicle Accidents
Wrong-way crashes on interstate highways often lead to severe damage because vehicles are traveling at high speeds in opposite directions. Drivers may have little time to react, especially at night or early in the morning when visibility is lower.
These incidents can involve several vehicles within seconds, particularly on busy highways with multiple lanes of traffic. Sudden lane changes, attempts to avoid impact, and limited stopping distance may increase the chance of chain-reaction collisions.
Emergency response after a wrong-way crash can be extensive. Medical helicopters are sometimes used when injuries appear serious or when patients need rapid transport to trauma centers. Traffic delays are also common while damaged vehicles are removed and roadway debris is cleared from the interstate.
