What Happens During a Vehicle Extrication Response?
When occupants are trapped inside a vehicle after a crash, emergency crews may perform extrication. This process involves carefully removing damaged parts of a vehicle to safely reach and remove injured people. Specialized rescue tools such as hydraulic cutters and spreaders are often used.
In serious collisions, multiple fire and rescue units may respond to ensure enough personnel are available for patient care and vehicle stabilization. Crews typically work alongside traffic control teams to secure the roadway and prevent additional accidents during rescue efforts. Investigators later review vehicle damage, roadway conditions, and impact points to better understand how the crash occurred and why occupants became trapped.
