According to police, the crash occurred around 1:05 p.m. in the 2400 block of Canyon Lake Drive. Officers responded to reports of a collision involving multiple vehicles.
Investigators said a Fiat 500 was traveling eastbound at a high rate of speed when it crossed into oncoming traffic before swerving back into its lane. The vehicle then struck a motorcycle and caused a Buick to veer off course.
Both the Fiat and the Buick left the roadway and rolled over as a result of the crash.
The driver of the Buick sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital. The motorcyclist was not injured in the incident.
Authorities identified the Fiat driver as 67-year-old Robin Masters of Rapid City. Masters was arrested on charges of reckless driving and failure to provide proof of insurance and was taken to the Pennington County Jail.
The crash remains under investigation, and more information may be released as it becomes available.
We wish the injured driver a full recovery.
How Speeding Can Lead to Multi-Vehicle Crashes
Speeding reduces a driver’s ability to maintain control and react to changing road conditions. When a vehicle crosses into oncoming traffic, even briefly, it can create a chain reaction involving multiple vehicles.
Rollovers are more likely when vehicles leave the roadway at higher speeds or make sudden steering corrections. These crashes can result in injuries even when safety systems are in place.
Investigators often examine speed, vehicle movement, and roadway conditions to determine how these incidents occur.
