Why Pedestrian Incidents on Highways Often Lead to Severe Outcomes
Main travel routes near Interstate 55 and Weber Road can see heavy traffic, especially during overnight hours. Vehicles often travel at highway speeds, which can make it difficult for drivers to stop quickly if someone is on the roadway.
Pedestrians on limited-access highways face increased risk because these roads are designed primarily for vehicles. Shoulders may be narrow, and drivers may not expect to encounter someone walking nearby.
Reduced lighting, fast-moving traffic, and limited escape space can all contribute to the danger. These factors often make highway pedestrian crashes particularly severe when they occur.
