Romeoville, IL (March 4, 2026) – Authorities have identified the man who died after being struck by a vehicle early Sunday morning, March 1, on Interstate 55 in Romeoville. The fatal crash happened around 12:39 a.m. near Weber Road.

Officials said a pedestrian was hit by a vehicle along the interstate under circumstances that remain under review. Emergency units responded to the scene, and the man was taken to a nearby hospital.

The Will County Coroner’s Office later identified the victim as 25-year-old Brandon Mercado-Morales of Romeoville. He died shortly after arriving at the hospital early Sunday morning.

Investigators have not released further details about how the crash occurred. The incident remains under investigation.

We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased victim.

Why Pedestrian Incidents on Highways Often Lead to Severe Outcomes

Main travel routes near Interstate 55 and Weber Road can see heavy traffic, especially during overnight hours. Vehicles often travel at highway speeds, which can make it difficult for drivers to stop quickly if someone is on the roadway.

Pedestrians on limited-access highways face increased risk because these roads are designed primarily for vehicles. Shoulders may be narrow, and drivers may not expect to encounter someone walking nearby.

Reduced lighting, fast-moving traffic, and limited escape space can all contribute to the danger. These factors often make highway pedestrian crashes particularly severe when they occur.
