San Francisco, CA (March 29, 2026) – A fatal crash involving a vehicle and two pedestrians occurred on Friday morning, March 27, in Chinatown. The incident happened around 7:44 a.m. at the corner of Jackson Street and Beckett Street, just east of Grant Avenue.
Authorities said a silver SUV struck two pedestrians while attempting to park and then collided with the front of New Lun Ting Cafe. The vehicle came to rest partially lodged inside the building’s facade. Emergency units responded and transported both pedestrians to a hospital, one in critical condition and the other with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. One of the pedestrians later died at the hospital.
The driver, a 76-year-old man, remained at the scene and was cooperating with authorities. Officials reported that alcohol and drugs were not factors in the crash.
Authorities continue to investigate the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available.
Our thoughts are with the family of the deceased and the injured pedestrian as they recover.
How Vehicle-Pedestrian Crashes Can Occur in Urban Areas
Crashes involving pedestrians in urban areas often occur in tight spaces where vehicles and pedestrians intersect. Even low-speed incidents, such as vehicles attempting to park or turn, can cause serious injuries when pedestrians are nearby.
Urban streets with restaurants, shops, and dense sidewalks create additional hazards, especially at corners and entrances. Pedestrians may have little time to react if a vehicle moves unexpectedly.
The design of the street, vehicle size, and driver awareness all affect the severity of these accidents. Emergency response and timely medical care are critical in determining outcomes for those injured.
