How Left-Turn Collisions Often Involve Motorcycles
Left-turn collisions are among the most common types of accidents involving motorcycles at intersections. These crashes often occur when a driver turning left crosses the path of an oncoming motorcycle that is traveling straight through the intersection.
Because motorcycles are smaller than most passenger vehicles, they can sometimes be harder for drivers to judge in terms of distance and speed. This can lead to miscalculations when a driver attempts a turn across traffic.
Visibility conditions, traffic flow, and the angle of the turn can also influence how these crashes unfold. When a motorcycle strikes the side or front of a turning vehicle, the rider may be thrown from the bike due to the sudden impact.
Motorcycle crashes frequently result in serious outcomes because riders have limited physical protection compared with occupants of enclosed vehicles.
