Rochester, NH (July 10, 2026) – An afternoon crash between a motorcycle and an SUV left a 53-year-old motorcyclist with serious injuries near 214 Milton Road in Rochester. The collision happened around 4:39 p.m. on Wednesday, July 8.

Police said a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee and a 2014 Harley-Davidson motorcycle were both traveling north on Milton Road when the motorcycle attempted to pass the Jeep by crossing a double yellow line in a no-passing zone. The Jeep then began turning left into a residence, and the motorcycle struck the vehicle’s left rear quarter panel.

The Jeep driver, identified as 67-year-old Robert Melanson of Rochester, was not injured. The motorcycle rider, identified as Joseph Trask of Rochester, was taken to Portsmouth Regional Hospital with serious injuries. Officials said alcohol and speed do not appear to have contributed to the crash.

The Strafford County Regional Traffic Accident Reconstruction Team assisted with the investigation. The incident remains under review by authorities. We extend our thoughts to the injured and wish them a swift recovery.

How Motorcycle Passing Crashes Are Typically Reviewed

Motorcycle crashes involving passing maneuvers can be influenced by factors such as lane position, turning movements, roadway markings, and vehicle speed. Reviews may examine each driver’s actions, the location of the impact, and available evidence from the scene.

Double yellow lines and no-passing areas are designed to guide traffic and reduce the risk of vehicles crossing into opposing lanes. Road conditions, visibility, and vehicle positioning can also provide context when examining these collisions. These details can help explain how motorcycle crashes occur and why some result in serious injuries.
