Why Rear-End Collisions with Large Trucks Can Be Especially Dangerous
Crashes involving passenger vehicles and large trucks often result in severe outcomes due to the significant size and weight difference between the vehicles. When a smaller vehicle strikes the rear of a commercial truck, the front of the car may absorb most of the impact.
Visibility and speed differences can also contribute to these collisions. Large trucks may travel at lower speeds, especially when hauling heavy loads or pulling multiple trailers. Drivers approaching from behind may not realize the speed difference until it becomes difficult to stop safely.
Highway conditions can also influence how quickly a vehicle can slow down. Early morning travel, limited lighting, or sudden traffic changes may reduce reaction time and increase the likelihood of a rear-end crash involving a larger vehicle.
