Southern Pines, NC (May 17, 2026) – Four people, including a baby, were injured after a crash involving multiple vehicles Saturday morning in Southern Pines.
Emergency units responded around 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, to the area of U.S. 1 and Saunders Boulevard following reports of a three-vehicle collision. Investigators said the crash happened after deputies attempted to stop a Chevrolet Impala in nearby Aberdeen.
Officials stated the driver of the Chevrolet fled north on U.S. 1 before crashing less than a mile later near Saunders Boulevard. A woman riding in the Chevrolet became trapped inside the vehicle during the collision and had to be freed by emergency crews.
Authorities confirmed that four people, including two women and a baby, were taken to hospitals for treatment. One injured person was airlifted to a trauma center due to the severity of the injuries.
Additional details about the other vehicles involved have not been released.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. We are thinking of those injured as they receive medical care.
Multi-Vehicle Crashes During Pursuits Can Lead to Serious Injuries
Crashes involving fleeing vehicles often happen suddenly and can place nearby drivers at risk with little warning. High speeds and rapid lane changes may reduce reaction time for everyone on the roadway, especially at busy intersections.
When several vehicles become involved, emergency crews may need to rescue trapped occupants and provide care to multiple patients at once. Air medical transport is sometimes requested when injuries are considered severe or when faster access to trauma care is needed.
Busy highways like U.S. 1 can also become heavily congested after a serious crash. Investigators commonly examine vehicle positions, roadway evidence, and witness statements to understand how the collision unfolded and how each vehicle became involved.
