Rollover Crashes Often Become More Dangerous After Vehicles Leave the Road
Rollover crashes can become especially severe when a vehicle leaves the roadway and enters a ditch or uneven terrain. Sudden changes in elevation may cause a vehicle to flip multiple times, increasing the risk of serious injury or ejection.
Occupants who are not wearing seatbelts face a greater chance of being thrown against the interior of the vehicle or partially ejected during a rollover. These crashes often result in extensive roof damage and can trap occupants inside after the vehicle comes to rest.
Rural roads near intersections and open fields may also have narrow shoulders and drainage ditches close to the pavement. Investigators commonly examine tire marks, vehicle movement, and roadway conditions to determine how the crash developed.
