Vehicles Leaving the Roadway Can Lead to Violent Rollover Crashes
Single-vehicle crashes involving guardrails and uneven terrain can become especially dangerous when a vehicle loses stability at highway speeds. Once a vehicle leaves the roadway, it may strike barriers, go airborne, or overturn after landing on rough ground.
Roadways near railroad crossings, wooded areas, or embankments can increase the severity of crashes due to sudden elevation changes and obstacles beyond the pavement. Airborne crashes often cause extensive vehicle damage and can throw occupants violently inside the cabin.
Investigators commonly review speed, roadway position, and physical evidence near the guardrail to better understand how the vehicle left the roadway. Long highway closures are also common after fatal crashes, as crews reconstruct the scene and remove debris.
