Spokane, WA (May 4, 2026) – Two people were hospitalized, including one in critical condition, following a house fire Sunday in Spokane.
According to the Spokane Fire Department, crews responded around 11:00 a.m. to a reported residential fire on Rowan Avenue. Initial reports indicated that individuals were still inside the home and hesitant to evacuate.
Fire officials said one person was able to exit the residence on their own and was transported to a hospital with minor injuries. A second person was located unresponsive inside the home and was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
Crews worked to contain the fire, which was primarily confined to the second floor of the house. However, smoke and structural damage, including roof damage, displaced the residents.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Our thoughts are with those affected, and we hope for the recovery of the injured.
What Makes House Fires Especially Dangerous?
House fires can become life-threatening within minutes, especially when smoke spreads quickly through enclosed spaces. In many cases, smoke inhalation poses a greater risk than flames, as it can render occupants unconscious before they are able to escape.
Delayed evacuation, whether due to confusion, panic, or attempts to gather belongings, can significantly increase the risk of injury. Structural damage and heat can also weaken parts of a home, making conditions even more hazardous for both residents and responders.
Having working smoke detectors, a clear escape plan, and exiting immediately when a fire is detected are critical steps that can save lives.
