What Can Lead to Multiple Crashes on the Same Highway Stretch?
Busy approaches near Interstate 55 can slow rapidly following crashes. Crews in Springfield may redirect traffic as needed to reduce further risk.
When one crash occurs, drivers approaching the scene may not have enough time to react. Sudden braking or lane changes can lead to additional collisions, especially in areas with heavy traffic.
Road conditions, visibility, and vehicle spacing all influence how these situations develop. Multiple crashes in the same area can also increase delays as responders work to clear vehicles and restore safe travel.
