How Turning Crashes Can Affect Motorcycle Riders
Motorcycle riders can face severe harm when a larger vehicle turns across their path. Cars and trucks offer greater protection to their occupants, while riders have little protection during impacts.
Left-turn crashes often happen at intersections where vehicles cross active lanes of travel. A driver may be focused on gaps in traffic, traffic signals, or nearby vehicles. A motorcycle’s smaller size can also make it harder to notice quickly.
In these crashes, the angle of impact can affect the severity of the rider’s injuries. Speed, braking, lane position, and the point of contact may all shape the outcome. Even a brief delay in seeing a motorcycle can lead to a serious collision.
