Berlin, MD (July 14, 2026) – A Maryland State Trooper and a 16-year-old driver were both seriously hurt in a crash on US-50 near Starmer Lane in Berlin just before 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 12. A Land Rover traveling north on Maryland Route 818 failed to yield to oncoming traffic while attempting to cross the intersection at Route 50, striking the trooper’s eastbound marked patrol vehicle.

The trooper was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital before being flown to a trauma center for further treatment. The teen driving the Land Rover was also flown to a trauma center. US-50 was closed in both directions near Main Street while emergency units worked and cleared the scene.

The investigation will be presented to the Office of the State’s Attorney to determine whether charges will be filed. No further details about the conditions of either person hurt were included in the initial report on the accident.

The crash remains under active review. We hope both the trooper and the teen make full recoveries.

What Happens When a Failure to Yield Causes a Crash With an Occupied Patrol Vehicle?

Crashes caused by a failure to yield at a highway intersection can happen quickly, particularly when a driver crossing a high-speed route misjudges the distance or speed of approaching traffic. On a road like US-50, which carries significant traffic moving at highway speeds, the margin for error during a crossing maneuver is narrow. A vehicle that enters the intersection without confirming a clear path can be struck before either driver has time to react.

When a crash involves a law enforcement vehicle, the investigation is typically handled with additional oversight to ensure impartiality. In Maryland, cases involving trooper-involved crashes may be reviewed by the State’s Attorney’s Office to determine whether any criminal charges are warranted. This review process examines the actions of all drivers involved before any charging decisions are made.

Air transport to a trauma center is used when injuries are serious enough to require specialized care that nearby hospitals may not be equipped to provide. When both drivers in a two-vehicle crash require airlift, coordination between multiple flight teams and receiving facilities begins quickly. Trauma centers are staffed and equipped to handle complex cases that arrive with little advance notice.
