How Loss of Control Crashes Can Develop on Rural Highways
Loss-of-control crashes can happen when a vehicle leaves the roadway, and the driver attempts to steer back onto the pavement too quickly. Gravel or loose shoulder surfaces may reduce tire traction, making it harder to maintain control.
When drivers overcorrect, the vehicle may swing sharply back into traffic lanes. This sudden movement can lead to collisions with vehicles traveling in the opposite direction or in adjacent lanes.
Roadway speed is another factor. Higher speeds reduce the time available to recover from a mistake and can increase the force of a collision.
Vehicle fires may also occur after severe impacts. Damage to fuel systems or engine components can sometimes lead to a post-crash fire, especially when vehicles sustain heavy structural damage.
