Pasco, WA (May 27, 2026) – A 17-year-old e-bike rider died after being struck by an SUV at the intersection of Road 60 and Burns in Pasco. Police said the teen was taken to a hospital following the collision but later lost their life.
According to preliminary findings, the SUV had been traveling eastbound on Burns and had the right-of-way as it moved through the intersection. Investigators believe the e-bike entered the intersection at that time, leading to the crash.
Police also stated the rider was not wearing a helmet. The SUV driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Additional details about the people involved were not immediately released.
Investigators are continuing to review evidence connected to the fatal roadway collision. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the teen’s family and loved ones.
Why Intersections Can Be Especially Dangerous for E-Bike Riders
Intersections are among the most common places for serious e-bike and bicycle crashes because drivers and riders must make quick decisions while crossing traffic. E-bikes can travel faster than traditional bicycles, which may make it harder for drivers to judge their approach speed before entering an intersection.
Helmet use can reduce the risk of severe head trauma during a crash, especially when a rider is thrown from the bike after contact with a vehicle. Investigators examining these collisions often review right-of-way rules, visibility, traffic signals, and travel speed to determine how the vehicles came together. Busy intersections may also create additional hazards when multiple turning movements and crossing directions occur simultaneously.
