A man told reporters that his wife and their 11-year-old son were traveling westbound near SW 83rd Avenue when another driver struck their SUV. He said the SUV rolled over twice before coming to a stop. The woman and child were rushed to a nearby hospital, though the husband later stated they were expected to be okay.
The other driver involved was also taken for treatment. No update on that person’s condition was immediately available. Crews continued working to determine what caused the roadway crash. We are thinking of everyone hurt as they receive medical care.
How Rollover Crashes Often Lead to Serious Injuries
Rollover crashes can cause serious harm because people inside the vehicle may be tossed violently during the sequence of impacts. These collisions often happen when a vehicle is struck from the side, loses balance during a sharp movement, or hits a curb or median at speed. SUVs are more likely to roll over than smaller passenger cars because they sit higher off the ground.
Seat belts and properly functioning airbags can reduce the chance of severe harm during a rollover. Even when people appear stable after leaving the roadway, medical evaluation is often needed because some injuries may not be immediately visible. Vehicle speed, point of contact, and road design are commonly reviewed after these types of crashes to better understand how the overturn occurred.
