What to Know About Multi-Vehicle Crashes Involving Semi-Trucks on Missouri Interstates
Crashes on Missouri interstates that involve large commercial trucks and passenger vehicles can produce very different outcomes for each driver depending on the size and weight of the vehicles involved. A fully loaded commercial truck can weigh up to 80,000 pounds, while a standard passenger car or SUV typically weighs under 5,000 pounds. That difference in mass means the smaller vehicle absorbs a much greater share of the force in a collision.
When multiple vehicles are involved, investigators work to determine the sequence of contact: which vehicle struck which, and in what order. This is particularly complex when a large truck is part of the chain, since its size and stopping distance differ significantly from those of smaller vehicles. Physical evidence, black box data, and witness accounts all factor into that reconstruction.
Interstate crashes in Missouri are documented with precise milepost coordinates, which helps route investigation teams and emergency units to the exact spot quickly.
