Upper Dublin, PA (May 13, 2026) – Two people were hospitalized early Wednesday morning, May 13, after a crash involving an ambulance in Montgomery County. The collision occurred shortly after 4:30 a.m. at the intersection of Susquehanna Road and Fitzwatertown Road.
Authorities said an ambulance transporting a patient to Abington Hospital collided with another vehicle at the intersection, causing severe damage to both vehicles. Emergency crews responded to the scene and used rescue tools to extricate one person from the wreckage.
Officials confirmed that none of the ambulance crew members were injured. However, the patient inside the ambulance and the driver of the other vehicle were both transported to a hospital for treatment.
The impact caused the ambulance to overturn and come to rest on a nearby property. Surveillance footage captured the crash, and residents reported being awakened by the sound of the collision.
The incident remains under investigation.
We are thinking of those injured and hope for their recovery.
Why Early-Morning Intersection Crashes Involving Emergency Vehicles Can Be Severe
Crashes involving emergency vehicles can result in serious injuries due to speed, urgency of travel, and limited reaction time at intersections. Early morning hours may also contribute to reduced visibility, fatigue, and delayed driver awareness, all of which can increase the likelihood of a collision.
Intersections like Susquehanna Road and Fitzwatertown Road can become especially dangerous when multiple vehicles are crossing or responding to signals under low-light conditions. Drivers may have difficulty identifying approaching emergency vehicles in time to yield, particularly if sightlines are obstructed or traffic signals are changing phases.
Investigators review traffic signal timing, vehicle speed, and right-of-way decisions to understand how such collisions occur. They also examine whether emergency lights and sirens were active and clearly visible to surrounding drivers. In severe cases, specialized rescue tools are required to safely remove trapped occupants from heavily damaged vehicles, particularly when structural intrusion or vehicle deformation limits access for first responders.
