Vail, AZ (March 25, 2026) – A woman died on Tuesday morning after a crash involving an SUV and a semi-truck at the intersection of Sahuarita Rd and Melpomene Way in the Vail area southeast of Tucson.
Emergency units responded around 6:40 a.m. on March 24, after reports of a serious collision at the intersection. Authorities said a red SUV was traveling westbound on Sahuarita Rd when the driver attempted to turn left onto Melpomene Way.
During the turn, the SUV entered the path of an eastbound semi-truck. The truck then struck the side of the SUV in the intersection.
The driver of the SUV, identified as 62-year-old Andrea Harris, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the semi-truck was not injured in the crash.
Officials said the investigation indicates that neither speed nor impairment was a factor in the accident. No additional details about the circumstances leading up to the collision have been released.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.
Why Left-Turn Collisions at Intersections Can Be Dangerous
Crashes involving left-turning vehicles are common at intersections. Drivers turning left must cross lanes of oncoming traffic, which requires careful timing and clear visibility.
If a driver misjudges the speed or distance of an approaching vehicle, the turning vehicle may enter the path of traffic too soon. This can lead to a side-impact crash, which often causes significant damage to the struck vehicle.
Large trucks pose additional risks due to their size and weight. Even at moderate speeds, a semi-truck can generate strong impact forces during a collision.
Visibility, traffic flow, and driver reaction time all affect whether a left turn can be completed safely. Intersections with higher traffic volumes may increase the likelihood of these types of crashes.
