Why Interstate Crashes Often Cause Major Traffic Disruptions
Crashes on interstate highways can quickly lead to significant backups, especially when all travel lanes are blocked for emergency response efforts. High-speed traffic and limited shoulder space often require temporary closures to allow crews to safely assist victims and remove damaged vehicles.
Investigators reviewing interstate collisions typically examine traffic flow, lane changes, speed, and roadway conditions. Even crashes involving a small number of vehicles can disrupt travel for extended periods when they occur near exits or heavily traveled corridors. Emergency responders also work to reduce the risk of secondary crashes while traffic is diverted around the scene.
