Washington County, MO (May 5, 2026) – Two drivers were injured in a two-vehicle crash that occurred Monday evening on Missouri Route 21 south of Shoal Rd in Washington County. The incident was reported around 5:55 p.m. and involved a northbound and a southbound vehicle.
According to initial information, a 2003 Ford Focus traveling northbound attempted a left turn into the path of a southbound 2006 Ford Fusion. The Fusion struck the front right side of the Focus during the turn.
After the impact, the Fusion left the roadway, traveled off the right side, and struck a tree. The vehicle came to rest blocking the southbound lane of MO-21. Both vehicles sustained total damage and were towed from the scene.
The 57-year-old male driver of the Fusion was transported to Mercy Hospital South with moderate injuries. The 74-year-old male driver of the Focus was also transported to Washington County Memorial Hospital with moderate injuries.
Emergency units responded to assist and manage traffic while the roadway was cleared.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. We are thinking of both drivers as they recover.
What Often Leads to Left-Turn Collisions on Two-Lane Highways?
Left-turn crashes on two-lane highways commonly occur when a driver misjudges the distance or speed of oncoming traffic. These types of collisions often happen at intersections or rural road crossings.
Limited visibility can increase risk, especially on roads without traffic signals or dedicated turn lanes. Drivers may not always have enough time to complete a turn safely if approaching traffic is moving faster than expected.
When impact occurs during a turning movement, the force can push one vehicle off the roadway, sometimes resulting in secondary collisions such as striking trees or other roadside objects.
