How Side-Swipe Crashes Can Become Severe or Fatal
Side-swipe crashes often happen when two vehicles travel close together, and one drifts into another lane. These impacts can occur during lane changes, turns, or when visibility is reduced.
At higher speeds, even a sideswipe can cause a driver to lose control of their vehicle. This may lead to secondary impacts with nearby objects, other vehicles, or roadway barriers.
Early morning hours can also increase risk due to reduced visibility and lower traffic awareness. In some cases, investigators review roadway layout, lighting, and driver behavior to understand how the crash developed.
