Why Curves on Rural Highways Can Increase Crash Risk
Curved sections of rural highways can present added challenges for drivers and motorcyclists. When approaching a curve, speed must be reduced to maintain control and stay within the proper lane. Taking a curve too fast can cause a vehicle to drift across the center line or leave the roadway.
Motorcycles may be especially affected because they rely heavily on balance and traction. Road conditions such as loose gravel, uneven pavement, or moisture can further reduce stability. Riders must adjust their speed and position to safely match the curve.
Road design also affects visibility. Curves can limit how far ahead a driver can see, reducing reaction time if another vehicle is approaching. Slowing down and staying alert can help reduce the chance of a serious collision in these areas.
