What Happens When a Vehicle Crosses the Centerline on a Highway?
When a vehicle crosses the centerline on a two-lane highway, it often leads to head-on crashes, which are among the most severe types of roadway incidents. These situations can occur due to driver fatigue, distraction, or loss of control.
Road markings like centerlines are meant to separate opposing traffic flows and reduce the risk of direct impact. When a vehicle moves out of its lane, drivers traveling in the opposite direction may have very little time to react.
Vehicle speed and road conditions can also affect how serious the crash becomes. Even a brief lane departure can result in major damage, especially when larger vehicles like trucks are involved.
