Why Roundabouts Can Be Challenging for Drivers at Night
Intersections like the roundabout at 161st Street and U.S. 31 often require drivers to slow down, yield, and judge gaps in traffic before entering. At night, reduced visibility can make it harder to see approaching vehicles or properly gauge speed and distance.
Roundabouts are designed to improve traffic flow and reduce severe crashes, but they still require careful attention. Drivers must watch for vehicles already in the circle and adjust speed accordingly. Mistakes when entering can lead to side-impact collisions.
Lighting conditions, unfamiliar layouts, and driver reaction time can all affect how safely a roundabout is used. Clear signage and proper lane use are key factors that help reduce the risk of crashes in these areas.
