Wharton, NJ (April 9, 2026) – A multi-vehicle crash on Thursday morning on Interstate 80 West in Wharton Borough claimed the life of a 39-year-old woman and left three others injured.
The crash occurred around 8:08 a.m. when a Subaru, driven by Trisha Hutchinson of Piscataway, was struck from behind by an Audi. Authorities say the impact caused the Subaru to spin out and crash into a guardrail.
Following the initial collision, the Audi continued forward and struck two additional vehicles, identified as a Pontiac and a Chevrolet. Hutchinson suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead as a result of the crash.
The driver of the Audi and two juvenile passengers were transported to a nearby hospital with moderate injuries. No other injuries were reported. The roadway was impacted as emergency crews responded and worked to clear the scene.
The crash remains under investigation, and additional details may be released as they become available.
We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.
What Happens in Chain-Reaction Crashes on Busy Highways
Chain-reaction crashes often begin with a single impact that causes one vehicle to lose control, leading to additional collisions.
High traffic volumes and close following distances can increase the likelihood of multiple vehicles becoming involved.
Guardrails and roadway barriers may reduce further danger, but the initial force of impact can still result in serious or fatal injuries.
