Why Crossing Outside Marked Areas Increases Pedestrian Risk
Crossing a road outside a marked crosswalk can increase the chance of a crash. Drivers are more likely to expect pedestrians at intersections or designated crossing points. When someone crosses mid-block, it can catch drivers off guard.
Visibility also plays a role, especially on multi-lane roads. Vehicles in one lane may block drivers in other lanes’ view of pedestrians. This reduces reaction time and increases the likelihood of a collision.
Traffic speed and road width further affect safety. Wider roads take longer to cross, increasing exposure to moving vehicles. Awareness from both drivers and pedestrians can influence how these situations develop.
