What Should Drivers Know About Pedestrian Safety in Colorado Residential Areas?
Residential streets in Colorado see a meaningful share of pedestrian crashes each year, particularly in neighborhoods where children are likely to be walking or playing near the road. Drivers passing through these areas are expected to watch carefully at intersections and side streets where visibility may be limited.
Colorado law requires drivers to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks and to exercise extra caution in areas where kids are present. Speed limits in residential zones are set lower precisely because the margin for error is smaller when people on foot are nearby.
Crashes involving children as pedestrians often happen close to home, where families may feel a greater sense of safety. Awareness of surroundings and reduced speed are two of the most effective ways drivers can reduce the risk of these types of accidents in neighborhood settings.
