Winnetka, CA (May 11, 2026) – Four people were taken to the hospital after a two-car crash in the Winnetka area of Los Angeles. The accident happened shortly after 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 10, on Winnetka Avenue.
The crash caused a fire hydrant to break, sending water high into the air. Four people, including children, were trapped inside a car beneath the water before emergency units reached them.
Crews removed one of the car’s doors while working to get the children out safely. The hydrant was later shut off at the scene.
Paramedics took four people to the hospital, while a fifth person was checked at the scene but declined to be taken to a hospital.
The crash remains under investigation; additional details may become available as authorities continue their review.
We extend our thoughts to those injured and wish them a full recovery.
Why Crashes Involving Fire Hydrants Can Be Dangerous
Crashes that damage fire hydrants can create fast-changing hazards. A strong water geyser may reduce visibility, flood the roadway, and make it harder for people inside a damaged vehicle to get out. Wet pavement can also increase the risk for passing drivers.
When children are involved, responders often work carefully to remove doors or clear damaged parts of the vehicle. This gives crews more space to reach passengers and check for injuries.
A broken hydrant can also affect traffic and nearby property. Water may spread across lanes, sidewalks, or driveways until crews shut it off. After these crashes, medical care, vehicle damage, and roadway conditions are usually reviewed closely.
