What Information Is Typically Reviewed After a Residential House Fire?

After a residential fire, investigators commonly examine where the fire started, how it spread through the structure, and the conditions inside the home. Burn patterns, damaged materials, and the home’s electrical or heating systems may provide valuable information about the origin and cause.

Investigators also review the effectiveness of smoke alarms, the residence’s layout, and how quickly the fire developed. Damage estimates are usually prepared to document the extent of the loss to the structure and its contents. Once the examination is complete, officials classify the cause based on the available evidence, such as accidental, natural, or intentionally set.
